North Carolina police credit Michigan State troopers in capture of murder suspect in Ionia County corn field

ORLEANS TOWNSHIP — Murder suspect Raul Zuniga Contreres surrendered Saturday, emerging from an Ionia County cornfield that was surrounded by police after a two-day manhunt.

Contreres, 34, was wanted in the July 19 shooting death of David Smith, 36, in Haw River, N.C.

Contreres is a North Carolina resident, but fled to Michigan because his brother lives in the region, said Randy Jones, spokesman for the Alamance County Sheriff’s Department in North Carolina.
