The NY Times is an Ultra-Liberal Rag! These editorials about Sen. Gillibrand conveniently didn't allow for comments. Here is what would have been my comment:

she was one of the first to denounce former Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s well-meaning effort to make sure illegal immigrants drive with licenses and insurance.
Which as it turned out was the will of 70 to 80% of the Legal Citizens of the State of NY!

The OBL zealots are trying to intimidate her. I hope she doesn't change her position on opposing (all forms of) amnesty. Recently she mentioned something that while she "opposes amnesty" she is willing to consider renewable five year visas with the ability to apply for citizenship at the end -- which we all know represents de facto amnesty.

We have to let her know that we will not be fooled by such amnesty schemes. Please call her.

Gillibrand A Work In Progress On Immigration
    February 1, 2009
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand began working this weekend to change her conservative, anti-immigrant image, meeting with more than a dozen Hispanic state and city elected officials in Brooklyn Sunday and promising to start softening her stance ASAP on a topic certain to be crucial to her ability to defend her seat in 2010.

[b]After the two-hour meeting, el Diario reported Gillibrand had "changed her tune" on immigration, promising to work with President Obama on “comprehensive immigration reform that has an earned path to citizenshipâ€

After meeting with the New York Immigration Coalition:

In effort to soften anti-immigration rep, Sen. Gillibrand to support moratorium on raids

    BY MICHAEL SAUL
    DAILY NEWS POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT
    Updated Tuesday, February 3rd 2009, 5:18 PM

Since being appointed, Gillibrand has courted immigrant advocates.

Seeking to soften her anti-immigration reputation, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand promised immigrant advocates this week to support a moratorium on raids until Congress approves comprehensive reforms.

"We saw a very positive shift in attitude in the way that she looks at immigrant constituencies," said Chung-Wha Hong, executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition, which met with Gillibrand on Monday.

During a news conference yesterday, Hong said Gillibrand's voting record in the House reflected a "very hard-line" anti-immigration stance.

During her one-hour meeting with the coalition, Gillibrand agreed to support:

    • A moratorium on government raids until Congress approves comprehensive immigration reform;

    • Clearing the backlog of entry applications that have forced immigrant families to wait years to be reunited with relatives, and ultimately reducing the application processing time to six months.

    • Ensuring the temporary worker program includes a path to citizenship

A spokeswoman for Gillibrand, Rachel McEneny, confirmed yesterday that the senator agreed to those positions.

During the private meeting, Hong said the Gillibrand expressed regret for some of the votes she took in the House. The coalition released yesterday a list of nine votes deemed anti-immigrant.

"She actually very frankly admitted, 'Yeah some of the votes are wrong,'" Hong said. "She actually said if she had the same information that she has today she would not have voted the same way."
