Toddler dies in I-65 wreck, driver charged with murder

A 2-year-old girl died after being thrown from a vehicle that crashed on Interstate 65 Friday, and the driver has been charged with murder in connection with her death.

State police say Arturo Rodriguez, 22, of Louisville, had been drinking and was southbound on I-65 when he lost control of his vehicle about five miles south of Elizabethtown at about 5:30 p.m. The vehicle crossed the median and went into the northbound lanes, where it overturned.

The 2-year-old child, who was not riding in a car seat, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rodriguez and another passenger, Silena Smith, also of Louisville, were taken by helicopter to the University of Louisville Hospital.

Rodriguez was charged with murder, DUI, no operator's license, no insurance and failure to use a child restraint in a vehicle.

After Rodriguez was released from the hospital, he was taken to the Hardin County Detention Center, where he was being held Saturday on $500,000 cash bond.

ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (WAVE) – A man who stands accused of murder after his daughter died in a crash on Interstate 65 was in court for a preliminary hearing Wednesday.

Kentucky State Police say 22-year-old Arturo Martinez Rodiriguez was intoxicated when he lost control of the SUV he was driving on July 22. The vehicle crossed the median of I-65 near the Glendale exit and overturned several times. Two-year-old Sidolena Martinez was ejected and killed.

Attorneys spent about 30 minutes questioning a KSp trooper that responded to the scene. According to testimony, four hours after the crash investigators measured Martinez's blood alcohol content at .03.

Martinez Rodriguez is facing state charges of murder, DUI, driving without a license, failing to maintain insurance, and failing use a child safety seat. The case will now go to a grand jury which has 60 days to respond.

Federal officials have also placed an immigration hold on Martinez Rodriguez who they say entered the country illegally.
