McCain: I have trust of Hispanics

US Senator John McCain says his support for immigration reform has put him ahead in winning the support of Hispanic voters.

"I do ask for your trust that when I say, I remain committed to fair, practical and comprehensive immigration reform, I mean it. I think I have earned that trust," McCain said.

McCain claimed that his presidential rival Senator Barack Obama has failed to take a strong stand on an immigration reform bill which would provide legal residency for nearly 12 million illegal immigrants currently living in the US.

"Senator Obama declined to cast some of those tough votes. He voted for and even sponsored amendments that were intended to kill the legislation."

McCain's comments come at the beginning of a series of addresses by the presumptive presidential candidates to Hispanic audiences.

In US states such as Nevada, Colorado and New Mexico, Hispanics could play a critical role in presidential voting. A current AP-Yahoo News poll put Obama ahead among Hispanic voters, 44 to 27 percent.

Both McCain and Obama voted for a controversial 700-mile fence along the United States' southern border with Mexico.
Both presumptive candidates are in favor of allowing illegal workers to stay and apply for citizenship -- a move welcomed by industries such as agriculture and construction which depend on cheap immigrant labor.
