BROWNSVILLE, Texas -- A U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer working on the Texas border remains behind bars facing drug trafficking and bribery charges for his alleged involvement with Mexican drug traffickers.

Jose Luis Zavala, a 38 year old CBP officer was arrested on Friday by agents with Homeland Security Investigations and the DEA for taking money from Mexican drug traffickers in exchange for allowing drug shipments cross through his inspection lane at the Gateway International Bridge in the border city of Brownsville, information released by the U.S. Attorney’s Office to Breitbart Texas reveals.

The investigation against Zavala began on November 19 when he was working at the bridge and a van loaded with more than 2,900 pounds of marijuana drove up to his lane. The driver presented a U.S. passport at Zavala’s booth but the vehicle was then randomly selected for a secondary inspection, something that was out of Zavala’s control, according to the information provided to Breitbart Texas.

The driver got off the van and ran back to Mexico and agents found 2,996.4 pounds of marijuana inside the van; the drugs were in plain view and no effort to hide them was made.

Agents with HSI, DEA and Homeland Security Inspector General looked into Zavala’s personal cell phone and discovered that he had been receiving text messages to coordinate payments that he would receive for the smuggled drugs.
