US-Mexico border lacking agents: report

WASHINGTON (AFP) – About one-fifth of the 2,000-mile (3,200 kilometer) US border with Mexico lacks a sufficient number of border agents, and is vulnerable to illicit activity including illegal immigration, a congressional report said Tuesday.

The non-partisan General Accounting Office, (GAO) Congress's investigative arm, said in its report that border agents succeeded in stopping over 445,000 illegal entries into the United States from Mexico in 2010.

But some 873 miles (1,400 kilometers) of the US southern border does not have a sufficient number of border agents and is at high risk of illegal activity the GAO report said.

The report was requested by the House of Representatives' Committee on Homeland Security, after the GAO analyzed federal Department of Homeland Security border security documents and data supporting border security measures reported by the DHS for fiscal years 2005 through 2010.
