USCIS in Disarray - Threatens U.S. National Security

The American Council for Immigration Reform hosted a briefing on the security crisis posed by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) that threatens our nation if amnesty and guest worker elements of Senate Immigration Reform Bill 1348 ever become law. [Although this bill failed, its individual elements will likely be raised again in other legislation.]

This charge was made and substantiated by four immigration experts at the National Press Club. All four experts are deeply familiar with the operations of the USCIS office, which is responsible for processing applications for legal permanent residency, citizenship, and evaluating supporting documents. Among the panelists was Rosemary Jenks, who has worked on immigration issues since 1990. Currently, she is Director of Government Relations for NumbersUSA

USCIS in Dissary-Threatens U.S. National Security

This a bit off-topic, but freshman PA Rep. Christopher P. Carney was interviewed on "Lou Dobbs Tonight" June 4, 2007 to feature his announcement that he intended to ask Congress to hold hearings on taxpayer waste at the USCIS.

Although this message still appears on his official website, I have not heard anything further about this. Perhaps messages of support for such an investigation citing information about corruption at this agency might urge Congress to proceed with a full-scale investigation of the USCIS now.

Please see http://carney.house.gov/ , "Securing Our Nation's Borders" (right side bar).

His official statement is, "I intend to ask Congress to hold hearings to investigate the recent claims that the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is mired in inefficiency and wasting taxpayer dollars."

He also says, "Fighting illegal immigration is a top priority of mine...."

Rep. Carney formerly "served at the Pentagon as an intelligence analyst and senior advisor on intelligence and counterterrorism issues. He coordinated counterterrorism issues in the Middle East....", so he does not come to his consideration of the importance of the USCIS as a "national gatekeeper" as a "theoretical issue"; he has real knowledge in this area. (See "About Chris" on his website).
