Immigration official to discuss police training program

A federal officer from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Department will come to Green Bay April 12 to discuss a program that trains sheriff’s department deputies to enforce federal immigration laws.

The public is invited to the 10 a.m. presentation at the Brown County Library, 515 Pine St.

Brown County Sheriff Dennis Kocken told the Public Safety Committee last month that he was investigating the program in response to public pressure to take action against illegal immigration. He said Tuesday that he wants to involve the entire community in the discussion about the program before returning to the committee with any recommendations.

The federal government’s 287g program, which originated in 1996 as an amendment to the Immigration and Nationality Act, provides local law enforcement with training to identify, process, and detain illegal immigrants.

Some members of the community voiced concern about the program last month. Fernando Campos, a member of the Mayor of Green Bay’s Hispanic Advisory Council, said he thought the public was more concerned with deputies stopping violent crime and keeping roads safe than investigating illegal immigrants.
