Utah Cops: Girl, 7, slain while hundreds searched

Cops: Girl, 7, slain while hundreds searched

SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah (AP) -- A man held in the killing of a 7-year-old girl who vanished from her family's complex admitted he caused her death inside his apartment while hundreds of people searched for her, police said Wednesday.

Hser Nay Moo disappeared from her family's apartment on Monday. She was found dead Tuesday.

Esar Met, 21, was being held on charges of aggravated murder, kidnapping and evidence tampering, according to a document filed to support his arrest.

The body of Hser Nay Moo was found Tuesday, more than 24 hours after she disappeared from her family's apartment at the South Parc complex. Her body was found in the apartment where Met had been living for about a month.

Hser and her family are natives of Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, and settled in Utah last summer. The girl's father, Cartoon Wah, said through an interpreter Wednesday that he was grateful for an outpouring of public support.

"I have one daughter in this world, and I loved her the most," he said.

Police Chief Chris Snyder said Hser knew Met's four roommates and had played in the apartment many times. Wah said he had knocked on the door during the search but got no answer.

After Hser died, Met hid the body and left the apartment, Snyder said. The police chief declined to disclose details about how she was killed.

Met's roommates were not home at the time of Hser's death, and they had no idea what had happened until police entered, Snyder said at a news conference.

Candles, stuffed bears and flowers were placed at the apartment complex Wednesday.

Volunteers had searched for Hser after she walked away from her apartment after an argument with an older brother Monday. Hser had four brothers, one born just a few weeks ago.

The family is among more than 500 refugees from Myanmar living in Utah, said Norman Nakamura, Utah's coordinator for refugee resettlement. The country is governed by an authoritarian military regime and has numerous documented cases of human rights abuses, according to the U.S. State Department.

Authorities were still looking into the background of Met, who does not have a criminal record in the U.S., Snyder said.

Met's mother, Ra He Mar, who also lives in the apartment complex, doesn't believe the allegations.

"I don't believe my son did anything wrong," she told the Deseret Morning News.

I just saw this on the news Weds night about 7pm. I took some notes and was going to post it here, guess I don’t have to now.

What this report didn’t say, is that "..it will be 6-8 weeks before the results of the autopsy can confirm or deny any sexual misconduct.."

..re: "..Met, who does not have a criminal record in the U.S..." ..He's only been in the U.S. for 30 days..!

And ..just an hour later, I heard on the radio of some ‘Spanish speaking’ person running into another car w/a truck, killing the occupants.

Like so many radio hosts would say: I’ll bet money..!

    Esar Met

Kidnapping and aggravated murder charges were filed Tuesday against a young man accused of killing a 7-year-old Asian immigrant, whose body was left in a basement shower.

An aggravated murder conviction carries a possible death sentence, but Salt Lake County District Attorney Lohra Miller said she hadn't decided whether to pursue it.

She said her goal was to ensure that Hser Ner Moo's killer "never has any opportunity to do something this heinous again."

The charges against Esar Met, 21, were announced a week after Hser's body was found in the basement of an apartment that he shared with four men.

Hser's family live in the same apartment complex in South Salt Lake. They moved to Utah last summer as refugees from Myanmar, formerly known as Burma.

Hser was last seen leaving their apartment on March 31. After a search involving hundreds of people, her body was discovered by FBI agents the next day.

Police have said Hser knew at least some of the young men who lived in the apartment. The other four were not at home at the time and had no knowledge of the killing, Miller said.

Hser's body was found in the shower, with injuries to the head, neck and torso, according to court documents filed to support the charges.

She was suffocated or strangled and also sexually assaulted, according to the documents.

Met was being held in the Salt Lake County jail on $2.5 million bail. It was not known whether he had an attorney. Met, too, was described as a refugee, but his native country was not disclosed.

Met was captured in another suburb, Cottonwood Heights, a few hours after Hser's body was found and subsequently told officers that he caused her death, according to documents in the case.

Hundreds of people attended Hser's funeral Monday, including Gov. Jon Huntsman and wife Mary Kaye Huntsman, and the procession moved past Woodrow Wilson Elementary School where she was a student.

Her parents should be charged with neglect. What kind of parent allows a 7 year old girl to spend time at an apartment occupied by 4 grown men?
