Utah's driving cards for immigrants preserved

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Thousands of illegal immigrants in Utah will continue to be able to get driving privilege cards, but they're going to have to provide fingerprints and submit to a background check.

That's according to a law passed by the Legislature on Thursday and sent to Gov. Gary Herbert for signature.

The measure was originally an attempt to eliminate driver's privilege cards.

But it was amended by the Senate, and an attempt to undo that amendment failed in the House late Wednesday.

Republican Sen. Curt Bramble of Provo says about 42,000 people use the cards.

It can't be used as identification. But it allows illegal immigrants to get car insurance.

No other state offers driving privilege cards to illegal immigrants. Washington and New Mexico allow illegal immigrants to get a driver's license.
