RICHMOND, Va. -- Illegal immigration may not be the top issue facing next year's General Assembly, but some Virginia lawmakers are still pushing for tougher legislation.

Some Republican lawmakers plan to introduce bills that could represent significant changes in the immigration law.

Delegate Jack Reid of Henrico County said he wants to make it illegal to transport illegal immigrants. Two other delegates want to make it a crime for someone to be in Virginia if they don't have proof of legal U.S. residence. They also want to fine businesses that knowingly hire illegal immigrants.

Similar House and Senate bills failed earlier this year
