Fredericksburg woman who worked at DMV pleads guilty to giving illegal aliens IDs

A former teller at the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles office in the Fredericksburg area pleaded guilty yesterday to transferring driver's licenses to illegal aliens.

Danitza Johnson, a 30-year-old Fredericksburg woman, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Richmond, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Johnson pleaded guilty to unlawfully transferring identification documents. She faces up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine when she's sentenced Aug. 10, the news release states.

DMV workers are not allowed to issue licenses or ID cards unless the applicant's legal presence in the U.S. can be established with official documents such as a birth certificate or passport.

Johnson created and transferred three authentic duplicate driver's licenses to illegal aliens this past Jan. 11 without verifying their legal presence in the U.S., according to the news release.

Johnson admitted that she knew the recipients were not in the U.S. legally, according to the news release. She was paid about $3,000 cash for giving out the licenses.

The FBI and Virginia DMV Special Investigations Unit handled the investigation.
