IN: Indiana senator wants Arizona-style immigration law

Indiana senator wants Arizona-style immigration law

An Indiana state senator is proposing a bill that he says would implement an Arizona-style crackdown on illegal immigration.

The bill proposed by Republican Sen. Mike Delph of Carmel would require police to ask for proof of citizenship or immigration status if they had a reasonable suspicion that a person is illegally in the country.

The bill also punishes employers who hire illegal immigrants. Companies could lose their business license after a third offense.

Delph's proposal would also require that official state documents are issued only in English in most cases.

Delph says the bill is "tough, but fair."

But it's unclear whether the bill has much of a future in the GOP-ruled Statehouse. Delph has repeatedly pushed immigration proposals, but they have never passed.
