SANTA ANA – Police arrested a man suspected of killing another man following a fight between two groups over which Mexican state is best.

Ivan Sanchez, 21, of Santa Ana was arrested Thursday evening on suspicion of killing 35-year-old Esteban Navarrete, and of attempting to kill Navarrete’s wife and friends, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.

Police detectives got a call from an anonymous person who apparently recognized Sanchez from a surveillance video released by police Wednesday, Bertagna said.

Homicide detectives began looking for Sanchez and learned he was possibly fleeing to Mexico to avoid arrest, Bertagna said.

Detectives used a helicopter, surveillance teams and other resources to keep an eye on Sanchez. He was spotted getting into a vehicle, which was pulled over on the southbound I-5 at Red Hill Avenue in Tustin, Bertagna said. Sanchez’s father and two other people in the car were questioned and released. The District Attorney will determine if charges will be filed against the others.
