Port of Miami workers charged in federal drug indictments

MIAMI --

Federal agents have arrested several employees at the Port Of Miami in connection with an international drug-smuggling indictment that will be unsealed Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

The indictment charges 10 defendants, including 6 Miami-Dade residents who were arrested Tuesday by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

The case will be highlighted at a press conference at ICE's regional office Wednesday afternoon.

ICE Director John Morton and U.S. Attorney Wifredo Ferrer will be present along with other law enforcement officials.

Officials are expected to discuss border security efforts and the drug smuggling case from the Caribbean and Latin America through the Port of Miami.

The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge James Lawrence King.

The chief of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement will release details of a new South Florida drug smuggling indictment and highlight the work of ICE border security task forces around the nation.

ICE officials are expected to discuss border security efforts and a drug smuggling case from the Caribbean and Latin America through the Port of Miami at a 2:30 p.m. press conference Wednesday in Miami.

ICE director John Morton will announce the Border Enforcement Security Task Force's (BEST's) enforcement efforts and other issues at the conference at 11226 NW 20th Street.
