Six charged in Illegal Immigrant ID sting

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Six people are busted Tuesday night, after an elaborate scheme, allegedly trying to get illegal immigrants ID's and Driver's Licenses.

Right now, we are told DMV investigators are working to figure out how many licenses may be on the streets with illegal immigrants that shouldn't be.

Starting in 2008, investigators say Cynthia Salamanca would get "social security cards" and "Puerto Rican birth certificates" from US citizens she knew and sell them to "illegal immigrants".

Then, according to court papers, she hooked up with DMV employee Roberto Lainez, last October.

It was about a month ago when agents walked through the doors of the Chesterfield DMV on Johnston-Willis Road, to confront DMV employee Robert Lainez. And, in these documents, he admitted to working with Salamanca to get these illegal immigrants a driver's license.

Those documents go on to say, Salamanca would supply the cash -- between $400 and $1000 - he'd supply the licenses. Lainez told investigators that he actually would get paid sometimes by having money slipped through the crack of the trunk on his own car.

We tried to talk to Salamanca. But no one was home.

DMV leaders tell us its managers go through some transactions everyday to make sure stuff like this doesn't happen. Also, DMV investigators are inside everyone of the state's customer service centers.

DMV leaders say this is an isolated incident and no sweeping policy changes are in the works.

We've also learned that Lainez has been terminated from the DMV, as of October 7th.

Also, documents say this scheme involved DMV's in Virginia and Pennsylvania, as well as Virginia.

A trial for the 6 is set for February 6th in Federal Court.
