Police Say They Were Serving Man Warrant

HARRISONBURG - A Harrisonburg police officer was injured Monday afternoon when a television fell off a wall and struck him in the head during a fight with a suspected illegal immigrant.

Officer Chris Meadows went to serve a warrant on Melvin Romero, a 37-year-old employee at Coste Latino, a hair salon located on Carlton Street, said Lt. Kurt Boshart, spokesman for the Harrisonburg Police Department.

Boshart said that when Meadows attempted to arrest Romero on assault and battery charges related to a domestic situation, Romero resisted and a struggle took place.

"An officer got hit in the head by a TV when it fell off the wall," Boshart said.

He said Meadows suffered a cut to his head and went to Rockingham Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Romero was taken to the Rockingham County Jail where he's being held without bond, according to Sgt. Felicia Glick of the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office. She also said Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed a hold on Romero.

In addition to the previous assault-and-battery charges against Romero, Boshart said charges related to the struggle with Meadows are pending.
