HIDALGO COUNTY
Valley Woman Asks For Help With Illegal Brazilians
June 1, 2005, 10:24 AM
Reported by Romeo Cantu
A Hidalgo County woman contacted the Action 4 News Listens Line Tuesday asking for help over the growing problem of illegal Brazilians crossing the border.
In an e-mail, Idalia Gonzalez wrote, “This whole Brazilian problem has gotten out of control."
Action 4 News went to her home to check out the problem.
Just south of the town of Palmview in southwestern Hidalgo County, Gonzalez likes to go walking with her dog on her family's land.
But lately, she's discovered she's not the only one walking these dirt roads, especially because the Rio Grande River is just down the road.
“(We are) bout two blocks, two or three blocks from the river. We can walk, but right now it's real muddy, she said.
Evidence that illegal immigrants have been through here is every where.
Gonzalez said that lately she's noticed a lot of people coming from Brazil and it's evident in some of things they leave behind, like toothpaste with country's flag on it.
She said that she's seen the number of Brazilians crossing daily through her family's land increase dramatically in just the last few months.
“About 15 to 20 (Brazilians) ...I counted 30 one time, Gonzalez said.
And she's not alone; many residents along the Rio Grande River are seeing an influx of immigrants, especially Brazilians.
Action 4 News cameras captured nearly twenty of them being detained by border patrol agents just a couple of weeks ago along U.S. Expressway 83 near the town of La Grulla in Starr County.
According to the latest figures released by the U.S. Border Patrol, in the fiscal year of 2004 there were a little over 2,600 Brazilians captures in the Rio Grande Valley sector.
Already this year, there have been more than 14,000.
Gonzalez said that she's concerned for her family's safety and wants something to be done about the illegal immigration problems in her back yard.
“When is it going to stop? she asked. “When are they going to stop coming from over there down to here? What is President Bush going to do stop all these Brazilians from coming through? How come they're here everyday, everyday?
Action 4 News did check with the Border Patrol to find the answers to some of her questions but they were unavailable for comment Tuesday night."The defense of a nation begins at it's borders" Tancredo
