CAFTA cedes too much sovereignty, hurts nation
Just after midnight July 28, Congress passed the Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement ("Central American trade pact OK'd," July 2. It was promoted as facilitating "free trade" between the United States, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica.
Many congressmen evidently considered it a benefit to the United States. So why was there intense opposition to the bill for months? Could even one member of Congress honestly say that he or she had read the 2,400-page bill?
CAFTA has little to do with free trade and much to do with massive government intervention into trade regulation. It is really an outsourcing agreement that will destroy thousands of American jobs, as the North American Free Trade Agreement has, allowing American industries a larger slave-labor work force. It will involve open borders with Central American countries that are flooding America with unskilled labor and potential drug dealers and terrorists.
CAFTA is a step toward Free Trade Area of the Americas, which is proposed to include 34 nations in this hemisphere with open borders. We should expect President Bush to commence the drive for passage of FTAA soon, since he called for passage in January. The Bush administration has placed America a step closer to global government. The Constitution Party of Florida strongly opposes such a planned loss of American sovereignty to international forces. The 17 Florida Republican representatives who voted for CAFTA deserve, and we trust will face, strong opposition to reelection. They must be replaced by patriots who love American free enterprise and the nation's sovereignty.
