A Verizon contractor on Thursday terminated a Missouri subcontractor that hired six men whom federal immigration authorities took into custody as suspected illegal aliens.

InfraSource Underground Services, based in Glen Ellyn, Ill., terminated a contract with subcontractor HL&K LLC, which hired the men from Honduras and El Salvador about a week ago to lay fiber-optic cable in Pittsburgh, said InfraSource spokesman John Conte.

The men were traveling to a job when Pittsburgh police stopped their truck Wednesday morning on an inbound parkway ramp near the Fort Pitt Tunnel entrance. Police transferred custody of six men to Immigration and Customs Enforcement investigators to verify their status. Federal officials did not return messages yesterday.

As a subcontractor for InfraSource, HL&K was "contractually required to comply with all applicable laws and work standards, and to maintain proper identification documentation," said Conte, of Media in Delaware County. "InfraSource routinely monitors compliance and performance of its subcontractors. This is not how we do business."
