McKinney man wounded in SWAT shootout

    By BILL MILLER
    Star-Telegram Staff Writer

A McKinney man suspected of trying to recruit someone to kill a police detective was wounded early Thursday in a shootout with the city’s SWAT team, police said.

Guillermo Urquiza, 26, was flown by helicopter ambulance to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, said Capt. Randy Roland, a McKinney police spokesman. He was listed in critical condition at Parkland, a hospital spokesman said.

It was the first time that McKinney police had fired weapons since June 2001, Roland said in a news release.

The shooting happened about 12:14 a.m. as the SWAT team and detectives took a felony search and arrest warrant for Urquiza to a home in the 800 block of Inland Lane, Roland said. The neighborhood is on the west side of U.S. 75, near the Al Ruschhaupt Soccer Complex.

Police suspected Urquiza of trying to a hire a police informant ``to kill a property crime detective who was actively investigating an offense involving the suspect,’’ Roland said. The charge was for solicitation of capital murder.

When the officers reached the front door, Roland said, ``they were met with gunfire coming from inside the house.’’

SWAT officers fired back, striking Urquiza in the stomach and legs, Roland said.

Urquiza faces nine new charges of attempted capital murder, in addition to the solicitation charge.

Also during the raid, police arrested Urquiza’s 56-year-old mother, Maria Del Carmen Urquiza, and took her to the Collin County Jail to face an order for deportation, Roland said. She was not hurt in the shootout, he added.

The Texas Department of Public Safety and Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement participated in the investigation, Roland said.

    Urquiza's condition upgraded to stable

    By DANNY GALLAGHER McKinney Courier-Gazette
(Created: Wednesday, April 26, 2006 2:38 PM CDT)

A man shot in the stomach and chest by tactical police last Wednesday in the stomach is no longer in critical condition at a Dallas hospital.

Lt. John Norton of the Collin County Sheriff's Office said 26-year-old Guillermo Urquiza's condition has been upgraded to stable as of Tuesday.

McKinney Police Capt. Randy Roland said Urquiza faces up to nine felony charges of attempted capital murder for shooting at the SWAT team during a warrant raid on Wednesday, April 12. He also faces an additional charge of solicitation of capital murder for attempting to hire someone to kill a McKinney Police Detective and could face several charges relating to the alleged stealing and illegally selling weapons.

Roland said police obtained an arrest warrant for Urquiza's arrest from Judge Curt Henderson of the 219th District Court April 12 after a confidential informant told criminal investigation detectives that Urquiza solicited a hit on McKinney Property Crimes Det. Corp. Marco Robles, who was investigating him in connection with some stolen and illegally sold guns cases.

Officers from the department's SWAT team served the arrest and search warrant soon after Judge Henderson signed it early Thursday morning. As officers approached the front door of the residence, they were met with gunfire coming from inside the house. Four SWAT officers returned gunfire after they entered the residence striking Urquiza in the stomach and legs, Roland said.

Maria Del Carmen Urquiza, Guillermo's mother, was the only other person in the house at the time of the warrant raid. Roland said Mrs. Urquiza had a deportation order under her name and she was transported to the Collin County Detention Center. She was not injured during the exchange of gunfire.

Roland said Mr. Urquiza was also an illegal immigrant and also had a deportation order under his name. He said he will not be deported.

None of the McKinney police offices involved in the raid and the shooting were injured during the exchange of gunfire.

Attempts were made to obtain information from Parkland Hospital personnel regarding Urquiza's condition, but they referred all questions to the McKinney Police Department. Roland said Urquiza's detention is now under the Sheriff's Office's jurisdiction since he will be transported to the Collin County Jail following his recuperation.

I guess he'll be deported so he can illegally enter again even though conspiracy and solicitation of capital murder should land him a life sentence

stolen and illegally sold guns cases.
am I reading this wrong? were there no guns?

Maybe the rat can gain "political asylum" on the grounds that he was persecuted by the police that he was trying to kill. Good riddance to bad rubbage.

The only real question America should be asking is: How did a piece of garbage like that get in our country in the first place? Wake up, America!

Urquiza found guilty on one count, not guilty on another

Urquiza found guilty on one count, not guilty on another
    By Danny Gallagher, McKinney Courier-Gazet

A jury of nine women and three men took less than nine hours to find Guillermo "Billy" Urquiza, 26, of McKinney guilty and not guilty for assaulting two McKinney police officers.

The jury returned a guilty verdict against Urquiza on the first count of first-degree felony count of aggravated assault of a public servant for attempting to shoot McKinney police officer Jessie "Jesus" Garcia. It returned a not-guilty verdict on the second count of the same charge for attempting to shoot McKinney Police Officer Jason Norton, according to the charge of the court.

Jurors announced the verdict at about 11:15 Monday. They spent about seven hours deliberating before recessing for the weekend at 9 p.m. Friday. They returned on Monday and came out after two hours.

Police charged Urquiza in connection with a McKinney Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team raid on April 12, 2006, at his home in the 800 block of Inland Lane. Officers claimed during their testimony last week that Urquiza fired a pistol at SWAT officers as they entered his home and they fired back at least 31 rounds into his bedroom. Police also said they couldn't determine which officers' bullets hit Urquiza after the shooting. None of the officers involved in the raid were injured.

The jury had to determine if "on the occasion in question, the person assaulted, if any, was wearing a distinctive uniform or badge indicating the person's employment as a public servant, then you may presume that the actor knew the person was a public servant." They also had to determine if self-defense was warranted "to protect himself against the other person's use or attempted use of unlawful force" or if "the peace officer uses or attempts to use greater force than necessary to make the arrest or search," according to the charge of the court.

The jury will return at 1 p.m. to the 199th District Court to begin the sentencing phase of Urquiza's trial on the remaining first-degree felony charge. According to the Texas Penal Code, Urquiza faces a possible sentence of five to 99 years or life in prison and a possible fine as high as $10,000.
