LA JOYA — Authorities detained 21 suspected undocumented immigrants after a police chase ended with a crash Monday evening.
A La Joya police officer attempted to stop a GMC Suburban on a traffic violation along Expressway 83 about 8:40 p.m. Monday, said Officer Joe Cantu, a department spokesman.
Police followed the vehicle east on the expressway to the Goodwin Road exit, where the pursuit led to the frontage road, Cantu said. The pursuit ended when the SUV crashed into a concrete pillar beneath an expressway overpass.
Three of the 21 illegal immigrants inside the Suburban were transported to an area hospital for treatment. The suspected smuggler apparently fled the scene on foot.
Those detained are natives of Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador, police said. They were turned over to U.S. Border Patrol agents.
