A growing immigrant population is disenfranchised by North Carolina laws, according to speakers at a local meeting Tuesday night.

About eleven people attended the Orange County Bill of Rights Defense Committee meeting, which featured N.C. Sen. Ellie Kinnaird, D-Orange, and immigrant rights expert Marty Rosenbluth of the Southern Coalition for Social Justice.

The speakers discussed the North Carolina legislative climate for the provision of immigrant rights.

Dick Paddock of Chatham County, who attended the meeting, said he only wants to vote for candidates who plan on working to help illegal immigrants in North Carolina.
Sounds like Mr. Paddock needs some education, not understanding the difference between legal immigrants and illegal aliens (which are lawbreakers to begin with.) The only help that should be given illegals is out of the country.

Staff writer, Katy McCoy, needs a lesson in identifying what is, and isn't, considered newsworthy. A gathering of eleven liberals is not newsworthy. The Daily Tarheel must really be struggling for news stories.

    Dear Senator:

Can North Carolina workers be displaced any further? Yes, they are being replaced and displaced as I write. Just go and asked your local North Carolina State Unemployment Offices if they are processing I-9 for local businesses and employers. What are I-9s? What is the ratio of issued I-9s in a state versus the hiring of North Carolina Citizens? So North Carolina is collecting I-9s without E-Verifying them, currently.

The I-9 is a form - Department of Justice: Immigration and Naturalization Service produces.

I-9 requires all employers to obtain information such as proof of legal status by using a social security card, green card, or visa when hiring an immigrant.

Some companies make copies of this so called proof used on I-9 forms.

But the I-9 IS NOT sent to be verified by any government agency, they are just filed.

ICE may be the only agency that will inquiry into the file cabinet of I-9s if ever needed in a immigration raid.

Once again the I-9 is not sent to be verified by any government agency.

So once again, the I-9s are filed and most likely will not be touched by any government agency ever.

(How long has ICE been around?) Not many years.

So first problem is: are the paper fakes; and just look authentic that immigrants uses to get a job. How are employers to discern between fake and legitimate documents. They cannot. Exactly, an employer's excuse for hiring undocumented immigrants are, "we are not document experts". Next, the employer's says, "we did not want to be sued for racial discrimination" so we just collect the I-9 information and do not ask questions of anyone. These employers are free to hire undocumented immigrants with no safety net for the North Carolina Workers/Citizens.

My local State Unemployment Office fills out I-9s for many businesses and employers.

But they only have to E-VERIFY I-9 OF AGRICULTURAL IMMIGRANTS.

So all the other I-9s are placed to never catch the light of day again in a file cabinet by the NC STATE UNEMPLOYMENT OFFICES. North Carolina has joined in the abuse of her own citizens at this point in my opinion by giving one group special treatment above the Federal Laws that undocumented immigrant have NO RIGHTS TO WORK in all states.

Currently the State of North Carolina for themselves are checking new I-9s hires by E-VERIFY. Why not E-Verify all immigrants employed in the State by all employers and businesses?

Why is there NOT a safety net for the North Carolina Workers/Citizens?

The I-9 was put in place after the 1986 amnesty to fool Americans into thinking businesses and employers were only hiring legal documented immigrant workers.

But as we have learned employers only had to file the useless I-9 papers in a file cabinet with NO VERIFYING BY ANYONE. So where is the safe guard for all of North Carolina Jobs? There is not "One."

I would like to see the ratio of I-9s getting jobs versus the North Carolina Citizens getting the jobs in our North Carolina State Unemployment Offices. And second how many of these I-9s were verified for the facts on them.

What I would like to see is the discrimination against North Carolina Citizens to stop by employers, who have been given no over site by local, state, or federal in concerns of the I-9s.

Please help with the abuse of I-9s not being E-Verified in our state. Arizona and Oklahoma are requiring all employers to use E-Verify.

    Sincerely Concerned North Carolina Citizen,
