Officers from five agencies have been unable to find two fugitives after the shooting of a Glenwood Springs officer who was spared by his bulletproof vest.
Officers were meeting late this morning to refocus their efforts on the investigation and tentatively planned to scale back search efforts for the assailants, the Glenwood Post Independent reported.
The shooting happened about 11 p.m. Sunday when two officers tried to question two men on foot near storage units south of the Glenwood Springs Airport.
The men ignored police commands and kept walking.
One of the men suddenly spun around and fired several shots with a handgun, Glenwood Springs Police Chief Terry Wilson said in a statement this morning.
"The officer was hit once in the chest and avoided life-threatening injury due to his bulletproof vest," Wilson said.
The unidentified officer was released after being examined at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs.
Police Lt. Bill Kimminau told the Rocky this morning the officer is doing fine: "He's at home."
Officers from Carbondale, Rifle, Garfield County and the State Patrol joined in the search, which included a helicopter and heat-detecting devices, the Post Independent said.
The suspects are described as:
A Hispanic male, 18 to 20 years old, very short hair, clean-shaven, wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, lace-up boots, jeans or dark pants.
