Staff Report

A Venezuela native will serve nearly six years in prison on a federal immigration offense.

John P. Cabello, 37, was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court in Brattleboro by Judge J. Garvan Murtha to 57 months in prison on the immigration charge. He had pleaded guilty earlier to the federal offense.

Federal prosecutors said Cabello is likely to be deported after serving his prison term.

According to court records, as part of a plea agreement, Cabello pleaded guilty to an indictment charging him with being in the United States in February, after having been previously deported as a result of prior convictions for selling cocaine and crack cocaine.

He was arrested after he was found by border patrol agents in Derby trying to enter the United States without inspection.
