Mexico’s failure: Ignorance & arrogance

When Arnulfo Valdivia Machuca says the U.S. government's failure to enforce its immigration laws led to Arizona's new anti-illegal-alien law and Pennsylvania state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe's bill modeled on it, he's right. But when he addresses such legislation's motives, he's dead wrong -- and exposes his considerable ignorance and arrogance, to boot.

Mr. Machuca is chief of international affairs for Gov. Enrique Pena Nieto of the state of Mexico -- a front-runner for the 2012 Mexican presidential election. "Legal vacuums always create political greed," he told the Trib, criticizing Arizona's law while in Pittsburgh to speak at a World Affairs Council luncheon. "If there's a legal vacuum for anything, politicians will always try to fill it up in their favor."

The relevant "legal vacuum," amigo, was created by that federal failure to enforce existing U.S. immigration laws. And the politicians trying "to fill it up in their favor" are the ones with a powerful incentive to perpetuate it: Democrats who see illegals as potential new Democrat voters.

The only voters that politicians such as Rep. Metcalfe stand to gain from cracking down on illegals aren't new. They're U.S. citizens -- and unlike Machuca and his Capitol Hill sympathizers, they know what "illegal" means
