Illegal immigrant detention center proposed in WVa

FRANKLIN, W.Va. (AP) -- The Pendleton County Commission is holding a public meeting this month on a company's proposal to build a detention center for nonviolent illegal immigrants.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Aug. 27 at the Franklin Community Center.

GSI Professional Corrections proposed to build a detention center in the Brandywine-Sugar Grove area that would house up to 1,000 detainees.

Local and state officials are seeking federal backing for the center.

County commissioners endorsed a "cooperative partnership'' with GSI to establish and operate the facility in a July 10 letter to U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd.

Byrd said in an Aug. 4 reply that he would forward the county's letter to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Although the numbers and per centage of the population of West Virginia represented by illegal aliens is very low they have a firm attitude against illegal immigration. The unemployment rate is high and many West Virginians commute for work to adjoining states where they are facing competition from the illegal aliens. This makes their voters acutely aware of the problem.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)
