Sunnyside man gets five years in holdup try

Yakima Herald-Republic

YAKIMA, Wash. -- A Sunnyside man will spend several years in prison for the attempted armed robbery of a Sunnyside convenience store.

Domingo Contreras Mendoza, 21, received a five-year sentence Friday in Yakima County Superior Court, according to a news release from the Sunnyside Police Department.

Contreras Mendoza was arrested Sept. 14 after a clerk at the Valley View Market, 107 W. Lincoln Ave., reported he had entered the store shortly before 4 a.m. and was acting suspiciously.

According to the clerk's report, the man was wearing a hat, jacket, mask and latex gloves.

Two officers entered the store while the clerk remained in the back room.

The officers said they had to order the suspect several times to put up his hands. When he finally did, a loaded .22-caliber rifle fell from under his coat, authorities said.

Police said they recovered 76 rounds of ammunition from the rifle and Contreras-Mendoza.

He remains at the Yakima County jail under an immigration hold that could see him deported.
