Undocumented immigrant, UW alumnus gets extension on deportation
By Andrew Doughman
November 12, 2009
Sen. Maria Cantwell has negotiated a 50-day extension for Alonso Chehade, the undocumented UW alumnus who was to report to an immigration-control office next Monday for deportation proceedings.
Alonso Chehade's deportation has been postponed until Jan. 5, 2010. Chehade hopes a state senate bill will be introduced on his behalf to allow him to remain beyond that date.
According to Chehade’s Web site, Sen. Cantwell met with John T. Morton, the assistant secretary of homeland security for U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement, this Monday and brokered the deal.
For Chehade, the break buys him more time to push for a permanent resolution to his problem: passing the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act in Congress. Introduced to Congress earlier this year, the act would allow Chehade and others in his situation to gain documentation for employment and permanent residency in the United States.
