Washington Post: Incoming Mexican government gives support to Trump admin's new asylum proposal

(CNN)A new Trump administration border policy requiring that asylum seekers at the southern border remain in Mexico while their claims are processed has garnered the incoming Mexican government's support, the Washington Post reported Saturday, citing Mexican officials and senior members of Mexican president-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador's transition team.

The plan, called "Remain in Mexico," emerged after a meeting in Houston last week that included Mexico's incoming foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, and other high ranking US officials, US and Mexican officials told the Post.

If put into effect, it would end the current practice of asylum seekers remaining in the United States while their applications are processed, the so-called "catch and release" by President Donald Trump, who is a vocal opponent of the practice.

"For now, we have agreed to this policy of Remain in Mexico," Olga Sánchez Cordero -- López Obrador's top domestic policy official as Mexico's interior minister-elect -- told the Post, calling it a "short-term solution."

"The medium- and long-term solution is that people don't migrate," Sánchez Cordero also said to the Post. "Mexico has open arms and everything, but imagine, one caravan after another after another, that would also be a problem for us

Two senior members of López Obrador's transition team told the Post that "Remain in Mexico" would simply formalize the de facto situation.

The Post further reported that while no changes have been officially codified, López Obrador's administration is open to the new policy.

Two US officials speaking anonymously told The Post that the new policy would allow the government to double the number of asylum claims it could process, as it would no longer be limited by detention space.

CNN has reached out to both the White House and DHS for comment.

Yes, Remain in Mexico and don't migrate in the first place. All this migration needs to be shut down world-wide, but especially into the United States which when allowed just encourages the world to abandon their countries and families and rob other countries and citizens of those nations. It's an ugly and harmful act all the way around.

They have no burden of proof for asylum. They are coached liars and the whole program should be terminated!

Hear the cases via Skype. Why should WE foot the bill to shuttle them to our Judges then foot the bill to send them home when they are denied!

Then the liberal yahoos will find a way to block them being deported!

KEEP THEM OFF OUR SOIL IN THE FIRST PLACE AND TERMINATE THESE ASYLUM, REFUGEE, TPS PROGRAMS!

WE DO NOT HAVE TO TAKE ANY OF THEM!

WE ALREADY ALLOW OVER 1 MILLION TO COME LEGALLY...HIT THE ROAD!

IF WE ARE FORCED TO TAKE THEM...THEN DROP THE NUMBER TO 10,000 THAT CAN COME LEGALLY!
ILLEGAL ALIENS HAVE "BROKEN" OUR IMMIGRATION SYSTEM

DO NOT REWARD THEM - DEPORT THEM ALL

That's right, they have no proof, there is no proof of any condition at all in any of these Central American countries or Mexico or most other countries where these illegal aliens are coming from to justify a passage of any "credible fear" interview. All these bad stupid interviewers need to be fired and replaced with smart and common sense employees who know the clear difference between a legal valid asylum claim and a pathetic sob story from con artists and frauds.
