Waukegan approves plan to help enforce federal immigration laws
June 18, 2007 - The city council in far north suburban Waukegan approved a plan Monday night to give local police help enforcing federal immigration laws.
The council voted to support a program called 287-G. It's run by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Under the program, state and local law enforcement are trained to identify and detain illegal immigrants. It was created primarily for police agencies in states that border Mexico.
Waukegan is among the first communities outside that area to adopt the program.

We have this bill also in Salt Lake City. It means nothing.

I got this from Cannon this morning. I have also read it in the Tribune. It is bill H.R.6089.
I also voted for H.R. 6089, "The Illegal Immigration Deterrence and Public Safety Act." This legislation reaffirms the authority of local law enforcement to investigate, detain, and transfer to federal custody illegal immigrants without imposing mandates. In conjunction with this, I supported H.R. 6091,"The Border Security Enhancement Act," which allows the Department of Homeland Security to use the same expedited procedures available for the removal of aggravated felons to remove other criminal aliens who are not permanent residents of our nation. And most recently, I voted in favor of H.R. 1018, "The Effective Immigration Enforcement and Community Act." This bill serves to impose "catch and return" rather than "catch and release" measures that have been exploited by illegal immigrants in the past. Under this bill, any illegal immigrant found to be part of a criminal gang is subject to deportation and is ineligible to receive asylum or temporary protected status.<div>''Life's tough......it's even tougher if you're stupid.''
