    Local News2007 State Bills
    01/16/2007
With an estimated one point four million illegal immigrants in Texas there are a dozen bills addressing this issue.
One strips U.S. born children of their U.S. citizenship if their parents are illegal immigrants.
Another would mean charging a fee for money transferred to Mexico.
Another does away with in-state tuition for undocumented students in public colleges.
Here's one argument in favor of immigrant restrictive bills.
Tyler Texas State Representative Leo Berman said about the growing illegal immigrant population, "In ten years… we are going to have 50 million… in the United states… Our country will change totally… Our culture will be gone...
We've been invaded without firing a shot.”
That’s one opinion, in the Texas Senate there are thirty one others.
Texas State Senator Eliot Shapleigh said, “This is a huge change in the way we looked at immigrants in this country whether we were Irish in the 1830's or Italians in the 70's why do we change this for Mexican Americans.”
There are other bills affecting El Paso.
Shapleigh says he will push for speaking rock to re–open their casino but hasn't seen much support from other senators.
Plus, a bill many senators can agree on: longer prison terms for convicted sex predators.
Texas State Senator Eliot Shapleigh says, “with sex predators the key is getting them out of society and never letting them have access to children.”
Between the state house and senate, it's hard to say which bills will become law. But you can bet it'll be a busy 2007 at the Texas capitol.

There is so much wrong with this statement. First that was the 1800's, not today, second these immigrants were legal, and third, they were skilled people, not uneducated peasants. They didn't come in demanding all kinds of services and they were not a burden. People can't come up with arguments that apply to the current times, so they have to dig way back in the past to find "strawman" arguments. It's pathetic and they make themselves look like fools.
