Weekend 'Tea Parties' will focus on amnesty issue

Weekend 'Tea Parties' will focus on amnesty issue
    Chad Groening - OneNewsNow - 11/11/2009 5:00:00 AM

On Saturday thousands of citizens opposed to amnesty for illegal immigrants will take part in special "Tea Party" events in more than 50 cities across the U.S. to make their opinions known.

Recently Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D-Illinois) announced that he intends to introduce amnesty legislation by the end of November. His "pathway to legalization for undocumented workers," he says, offers a "practical approach to dealing with the 12 million undocumented immigrants living, working, and raising families in the United States."

Given an opportunity to earn their citizenship, he argues, those illegal aliens will submit to background checks, pay their fair share of taxes, and learn English. Gutierrez, a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, does not agree with President Obama and Senate Democrats, who prefer not to tackle the amnesty issue until after the 2010 elections.

William Gheen, president of Americans for Legal Immigration PAC, explains the political implications of the proposal's timing.

"Many of the Democrats in the House are begging the leadership not to bring up the amnesty bill at all next year because they are fearful for their political lives in the next election," says Gheen.

"But Gutierrez is trying to say that he will not fall back any further, and despite the fact that Obama is asking him not to do it yet -- because Obama fears the backlash on it -- says that he's going to file that bill," he adds. "So we're trying to push him back into not filing that bill."

Gheen's group has organized dozens of Tea Party events for November 14 to oppose Gutierrez's effort. The website AgainstAmnesty.com offers more information about those events.
