Thread: Welfare fraud leads to ICE arrest of illegal Syrian

FORT EDWARD - A Fort Edward woman has been charged with a felony for allegedly lying on an application for welfare fraud, and police said the investigation of those allegations led to the arrest of her husband as well because he is an illegal immigrant.

Virginia Zinalabeden, 41, of Broadway was charged with first-degree offering a false instrument for filing after an investigation by the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

She was accused of misrepresenting her husband's income when she applied for public assistance, according to sheriff's Investigator Tony LeClaire. Her husband worked for a local appliance repair business, and she provided a fake letter on the business' letterhead representing his income as lower than it really is, LeClaire said.

The county Department of Social Services discovered the deception when it checked on the income information, before it gave out any benefits, LeClaire said.

During the investigation, sheriff's officers learned that her husband, Authman Zinalabeden, had been ordered deported to his native Syria last month after immigration proceedings in Albany. He was turned over to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

Good. This is disturbing though. Syria is not one of our allies, or in the least are even on decent terms with them, so anyone here illegally from Syria, is reason to be concerned.
