West Orange takes sides on immigration issue

WEST ORANGE — From West Orange’s mouths to President Bush’s ear. At least that’s what City Council hopes will be the result of a resolution passed Monday night.

Council’s resolution asks Bush to enforce the United States Immigration and Nationality Act. In addition, the council asked state representatives and congressmen to approve into law any amendments necessary to address border security.

“I think that the immigration problem has become a concern for border towns and all around the U.S.,” said Roy McDonald, West Orange mayor. “I also believe we have laws to take care of this, but we need enforcement.”

West Orange broached the immigration subject in response to Farmer’s Branch Mayor Bob Phelps’ request. Phelps said in an interview last week that immigration is a problem everywhere and the frustration is boiling over with the costs of covering the additional costs in hospitals and schools.

In other city business, the council approved a John Winn Jr.’s request for a setback variance for property in the 400 block of Osage. Winn is requesting the variance so he can build a carport near his property line.

Council tabled an ordinance limiting vegetation and structure height to 3 feet when located on property lines of corner lots.

In addition, an ordinance regulating outdoor burning was tabled.

McDonald said he thought there had been a bit of confusion on how the ordinances should be amended and requested it be tabled until the next meeting.

The next council meeting is 5:30 p.m, Monday, Oct. 9 at . at the West Orange City Hall.
