SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Earlier this week, President Obama announced that he wants a review of the country's deportation program. In the absence of the immigration reform that he's been pushing, Obama wants the enforcement of the current law to be more humane.

So who is being deported? The majority of deportations are for immigration violations, despite a push to focus more heavily on immigration violators facing criminal charges.

Data released by the Syracuse University-based Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse shows that 12 percent of deportation filings nationally were for criminal matters in the first five months of the fiscal year 2014. That's down from 14 percent in 2013 and 16 percent in 2012.

Deportation orders for immigration violations has increased each year. So far this year, overstaying and other immigration-related charges account for 34 percent of the court filings for deportations. That's up from 31 percent in 2013 and 23 percent in 2012.

For New York, the numbers through February show that trend. There were 4,613 deportation orders filed for the whole state. Of those, 4,180 were for immigration violations, such as overstaying a visa. The number of deportations sought for violating criminal law was 332.

For the Buffalo area, which handles all of Central and Northern New York, there were 711 deportation orders filed through February. Of those, 65 were for violations of criminal law; 594 were overstaying a visa or other immigration-only charges.

overstaying a visa or other immigration-only charges.
Charges such as re-entry after previous deportation. sometimes multiple times. That's a felony.
