When I moved to AZ more than 30 years ago we had the highest mail theft in the nation. Yes ID theft, and car theft has been huge my entire time here. The employer sanctions law may have had an effect - a known identity theft criminal, out on parole, recently was caught forcing her minor children to hold up other kids for I-pods and cell phones. She made her kids do this in the neighborhood that they live in and go to school. So yes, maybe it had an effect.

    The Tie between

I am appalled at how little victims can do to prosecute ID theft. It is nearly impossible to catch them, in large part due to government efforts to protect the criminlas.
The Social Security office knows how many numbers are being used in several states at the same time. They know it is not possible for Jose to work in Arizona and Texas at presisely the same time. Yet, Social Security will not notify the number holders because of government mandated privacy laws. You can not even ask SS if your number is being used elsewhere. But you CAN BUY ID Theft insurance that can restore your credit. Nothing to prosecute the guilty. Just costly protection to repair damage.
The IRS will come after the victims but seldom the guilty, why? Why can't the IRS do more to prosecute ID Theft? (because the government forbids it)
