    Reporting

(CBS 11 News) IRVING A business boycott and rally in Irving took an unexpected turn. One of its organizers was arrested and put in jail.

Nearly 50 people spent the evening at the protest site hoping that Carlos Quintanilla will bond out before 7pm and be able to attend their rally.

Quintanilla was arrested for outstanding warrants. According to police there were seven warrants – mostly for traffic citations in other cities.

An outspoken leader for ACCION America, Quintanilla has criticized Irving's policy of sharing jail inmate information with federal immigration agents.

The Irving rally floundered without him. "It's a small group of people that are here but, it's enough people to show and to prove to Carlos that what he's done in the streets of Irving is impacting people," said rally organizer Abimael Cerda.

The rally was to be part of a daylong boycott of Irving's businesses to demonstrate political muscle. It was a modest success in only a few isolated parts of the city and then only among small, family-boutique style businesses.

One of those impacted businesses is owned by Jorge Fernandez, who spent the day buffing floors in his salon. His stylists were moved by stories they heard of deportations splitting up families. "We learn to support the customers," he says. "I was illegal one time too and I know it's something very, very hard."

Fernandez, who came to the country 34 years ago, is now a United States citizen.

Irving police say they notified Quintanilla about the outstanding warrants and tried getting him to take care of them before Thursday. Friends say his bond is about $3,500.

I don't believe this was part of the plan.
