Thread: North America is being invaded, now Canada by Roma's

Here is an immigration issue facing Canada that I wanted to bring to your attention. I find it interesting that educators were caught by surprise. Is there no way in Canada (or the US for that matter) to alert school systems to expect waves of new immigrants, afterall government agencies must have granted admission to Canada for large numbers of Roma?

Nearly 50 years ago, I taught for 2 years in Chile. Taking a public city bus trip outside of the capital, Santiago, I saw for the first time people I had read about since childhood - gypsies (Roma). A group of gypsy women -- immediately recognizable by their long, colorful skirts, equally colorful blouses and scarves, and numerous bangle bracelets, attempted to board the bus carrying lighted cigarettes, which were not allowed. This was not long after the assasination of President Kennedy, which so affected the entire world. After the bus driver asked the women to extinquish their cigarettes and they refused, boarding anyway as a group, he brought the bus to a complete stop and told them he would not continue until they extinguished their cigarettes and threw them outside. "Where do you think you are," he asked them, "in the United States, where there are no laws?"

This was a very tough-looking group of women, I would not have wanted to cross them. I admired the Chilean bus driver's courage in doing so to enforce the required regulations, although I wanted to hide my head in embarrassment when he cited my country as an example of a place without laws.

While certainly Hitler's persecution of the Roma, together with many other targeted ethnic groups, was despicable, these were a group of women who obviously considered themselves apart from, and, I think,very much above, the people, their customs, and the laws which bound the rest of this society, its immigrants, and visitors. And it was quickly apparent in observing them why the "gypsy" population has never assimilated into any society in which they have lived - I think they have absolutely no interest in or intention of doing so.
