National listening tour on immigration stopping in Milwaukee

U. S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Chicago, will bring his national listening tour on immigration to Milwaukee Sunday at 5 p.m. at St. Adalbert's Catholic Church, 1923 Becher St.

The visit is being held in conjunction with a group of 50 local faith and religious leaders who have formed a Family Unity Committee of Wisconsin to push for comprehensive immigration reform.

During a 14-city tour that began in Providence, R. I, last month, Gutierrez and other faith- based organizations have held rallies and meetings to highlight the effects deportations have had on family members. Other members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus have held similar meetings. Gutierrez ends his tour on April 4 in Philadelphia.

U. S. Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Milwaukee, will join Gutierrez at Sunday's meeting.

At a news conference Tuesday, members of the Milwaukee Interfaith Congregations Allied for Hope (MICAH) said that the Family Unity Committee was formed six-weeks ago.

"The current immigration system is a violation of our religious beliefs," said Sister Barbara Pfarr, director of the civil rights of immigrants initiative for MICAH. She and other ministers said they want "fair and just immigration" reform.

"At Sunday's meeting we will put a human face on the issue and address the harm that our broken immigration system is causing millions of U. S. citizens," she said. Persons who have been affected by the deportation of family members will tell their stories, she said.

"Family is at the heart of society and if the family is divided or tormented, society is affected," said Rev. Walter Baires, of Ascension Lutheran Church.

"Welcoming the stranger is an edict from God, but too often they are rejected," said Rev. Glenn Danz of Zion United Church of Christ.

We should have had some protests going while they were meeting.

These US citizens should know better than to smuggle in family members illegally, that is if they were subjected to undergo any sort of citizenship classes. A: they either were given one of the numerous amnesties, or B: they went through the classes, passed their citizenship exam and decided it was all stupid; more important was to bring in as many bodies possible to suck up the American riches into their own countries that they never lost allegiance to.

I agree Texas2step..seperation of church and state. And yo SISTER! Not just immigrants they are ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. BIG DIFFERENCE!

We already know their stories. They came here knowing they were illegal and brought families illegally and had anchor babies to help protect them from the law and the consequences they faced. Yes , we know their stories!

The American citizens did not seperate the families!
