Illegal immigrant charged with identity theft

A 43-year-old illegal immigrant was charged Thursday for allegedly using a stolen identity while working at a Cedar Grove manufacturer for the last several years.

Alfonso W. Garibay, of 1334 Pennsylvania Ave. in Sheboygan, used an Illinois woman’s Social Security number to get a job at Willman Industries, according to a criminal complaint. He is charged with felony identity theft and could face up to three years in prison, if convicted.

Garibay is in jail on a hold from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and will likely be deported once his criminal case is complete, officials said.

The complaint said the identity theft was discovered after a woman who had a child with Garibay five years ago told police he was in the country illegally and using another person’s identity.

The two are in the middle of a dispute over a child custody and support agreement, court records show.

Garibay told police his brother gave him the Social Security number, which the Illinois woman did not know was being used, the complaint said. He had worked as a laborer at Willman since at least 2004, authorities said.
