RACINE - While in the Kenosha County Detention Center there are more than 100 illegal immigrants facing possible deportation, Racine's jail also has a few inmates facing the same fate.

There are currently 12 inmates in the Racine County Jail with immigration holds on them, said Lt. Kevin Brown of the Racine County Sheriff's Department.

Jail officials inform the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) of possible illegal immigrants when they run a search of inmates and find immigration warrants out for people, said Racine County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Steve Sikora. Then they place holds on those people, he said, and they are eventually sent elsewhere.

Sometimes those people with holds on them are sent to the Kenosha Detention Center, which has a contract with ICE to house detainees, Sikora said.

Racine County does not have a current contract with ICE to house detainees, Sikora said. When the county expanded the jail, local officials reviewed the possibility of contracting out some jail beds to ICE, Sikora said. The jail met the federal requirements needed to house detainees, but the government has not used the county jail for ICE detainees, said Sikora.
