There are new developments in a case that Action 16 has been following.

It is the story about a man who may be deported back to Canada even though he grew up in our area and served in the U.S. Navy.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security Tuesday afternoon Newswatch 16 learned from several sources the Department of Homeland Security will not pursue Mike Scampone's deportation.

Scampone first learned of his predicament when his Social Security card disintegrated in the wash.

When he went to get a new one a clerk at the Social Security office in Williamsport told him he was not an American citizen even though he thought his adoption was legal, that he was issued a Social Security card in the 1980s and he served in the U.S.Navy for five years.

Last month, homeland security's citizenship and immigration service denied Scampone's request for citizenship because he voted in presidential elections as an illegal alien.

Tuesday several sources close to the case said CIS will not pursue deportation, and will help Scampone get the assistance he needs to make his case for citizenship.

Because it cannot comment on individual cases, CIS is neither confirming nor denying the latest information.

Tuesday afternoon Scampone said he is relieved, and wants citizenship quickly so he can find a job, and, in the long run, be eligible for Social Security when he reaches retirement age.
