We're doomed. Our state wants to offer driving certificates to illegal aliens. And our mayor agrees saying 'as long as their here.' How passive. I'm getting very fedup again... Illinoisians we have to stop this.

WAUKEGAN -- The city's controversial vehicle seizure ordinance again brought about 50 people to protest outside City Hall this week.

Organized by the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, marchers called for an end to the ordinance they consider excessive and also asked for leniency involving the case of Paula Delgado of Waukegan, said Jose Guzman, president of the Waukegan branch of the labor council.

Delgado was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Jackson and Washington streets Feb. 28 when a Waukegan police squad car hit her car from behind, she said Wednesday.

The officer then pulled her over to a parking lot across the street to complete an accident report where she was given two tickets -- for driving without a valid driver's license and having no insurance. Her car was impounded and it cost her $770 in penalties and towing fees to have it released.

"The accident wasn't my fault," she said. She also said she had valid insurance.

Due to pending litigation regarding the vehicle seizure ordinance, Gretchen Neddenriep, a city attorney, said the Police Department could not comment on the details of Delgado's traffic stop.

Mayor Richard Hyde defended the vehicle ordinance saying that it has made city roads safer. Statistics show a drop in local accidents and traffic fatalities.

    Roadway safety bill

While the perennial protesters of the vehicle seizure ordinance do not always see eye to eye with the mayor, they all agree that something has to be done so that undocumented immigrants already living in Illinois can get permission to drive.

Hyde supports a new Illinois bill that would give driving certificates to undocumented immigrants in Illinois who pass a driver's test.

"As long as they are here and they are creating so many problems on the road, make sure that they get a driver's license and that they get insurance and then we'll all be safe," Hyde said.

The Roadway Safety and Mandatory Insurance Coverage bill passed out of the executive committee in the Illinois House last week and will be introduced in the full House as early as next week, said Joshua Hoyt, executive director of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights.

The driving certificate, which would look different than a driver's license and cost at least $50 more, could not be used to board a plane or buy a gun. It would only be valid on Illinois roads.

Instead of a Social Security number used to obtain a driver's license, applicants would have to show a valid individual tax identification number or passport and verifiable documentation of where they live to obtain the driving certificate. The applicant would be fingerprinted and photographed.

Six states already have implemented similar driving certificates and it is endorsed by the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police and the Illinois Sheriff's Association, he said.

"People will know who they are dealing with when they make stops," Hoyt said. "It will make us all safer."

This sounds like aiding and abetting illegals. Also where does it say that they must have insurance. Why should americans have to pay higher insurance rates just so an illegal can drive?

This is an excuse to get a voters registration card.

YOU CAN NOT ALLOW ILLEGAL ALIENS TO HAVE DRIVERS LICENSES AKA VALID AMERICAN IDENTIFICATION. They will not start buying auto insurance because right now they can get it without a driver's license.

Like that DL is the magic cure.
