Austin woman charged with welfare fraud

An Austin woman is facing a felony charge for allegedly receiving about $3,467 illegally from Mower County Human Services.

Kimberly Marie Alejo, 32, allegedly obtained the public assistance illegally between November 2006 and May 2007 by not telling human services that her husband, Francisco Alejo Rubio, worked at Quality Pork Processors in Austin.

An arrest warrant for Kimberly Alejo was filed Aug. 24 in a criminal complaint charging her with a single felony count of wrongfully obtaining assistance.

According to the criminal complaint, a Mower County detective got a welfare-fraud referral March 7 from human services related to Alejo, who claimed to be married to Rubio, who is an undocumented immigrant and allegedly unemployed.

An ex-landlord for the couple, however, told authorities that Rubio, 35, worked at QPP under another identity.

During the detective's investigation, the couple moved three times in the Austin area, and did not notify human services about one of the moves.

The detective found that Rubio worked at QPP under the name Miguel Gonzalez.

On July 13, Rubio allegedly admitted to police that he worked at QPP under a false name.

Rubio then was charged in Mower District Court with two counts of aggravated forgery for allegedly possessing a false Minnesota ID card and U.S. Social Security card July 13 in Austin.

Rubio pleaded guilty Aug. 10 to a felony charge of forgery, records show. Sentencing is Nov. 29.

Illegals are only here to do the work Americans won't do. So how are they getting welfare?
