DOVER - After police discovered a woman was in the country illegally, they investigated her home and found drugs as well as more people with immigration violations, Dover Public Safety Officer Richard Rosell said.

Officer Michael Pier and Detective Timothy Thiel responded to Sammis Avenue Aug. 21 on a harassment complaint and spoke to the resident, Rose Cuevas, Rosell said. But Pier remembered Cuevas from another investigation in June, during which she provided a different name, he said.

Pier found Cuevas had an active warrant for her arrest for a housing violation, and had a warrant issued for her arrest on a charge of hindering apprehension, Rosell said.

Information he initially provided to NJ.com did not specify what the nature of the June investigation had been, or what the alleged housing violation was. He said by email he had left the office for the day, but would try to find out more about those details tomorrow.

The officers notified U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which determined Cuevas had overstayed her visa, Rosell said. So ICE officials accompanied Dover officers to the home, to take Cuevas into custody. There, they found two ounces of cocaine, packaging material, and scales, Rosell said.

She was also charged with possession of cocaine, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and posession of drug paraphernalia.

Judge Gerald Smith set bail at $150,000, with no 10 percent option, Rosell said. ICE officials also placed an immigration detainer on her, he said.

ICE officials also detained two other people on immigration violations, Rosell said. He did not provide their identities.

Officers found various other housing violations and contacted Dover code enforcement, Rosell said.

Morris County Sheriff's K-9 Officer Jay Delturco and his canine partner, Rocco, also assisted in the investigation, Rosell said.
