Police: Stolen Property Totals $150K

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- New Mexico State Police confirmed that the discovery of $150,000 in stolen merchandise and the discovery of seven illegal immigrants are linked to an organized crime ring in Santa Fe.

Investigators said people involved in the scheme were stealing merchandise from mall stores in Albuquerque. Police said they have recovered the merchandise and it sits in piles on tables at police headquarters.

"Each row of tables represents one house where a search warrant was served," said Agent Jesse Williams of the New Mexico State Police.

Investigators said seven illegal immigrants were pulling off the thefts.

"They would just go into the stores, load up some property in their purses, go back out and put the property in their car, go back in and make several different runs," Williams said.

He said police responded to a tip in August that led them to Jesus Garcia and his lavish lifestyle.

"(He had) two nice houses, nice vehicles, they were bringing a lot of money with this merchandise," Williams said.

State police said they found most of the stolen items in homes and cars. Lt. Eric Garcia said more arrests are likely.

"It's going to take down a lot of people, not only in the first seven, but it's going to take down a lot more," said Garcia.

Police urged other people involved in the ring to turn themselves in because they said investigators will eventually find them.
