Suspect held after cocaine found in Hidalgo, Texas

    Associated Press

HIDALGO, Texas — A 40-year-old man was arrested after border officials found 53 pounds of cocaine under the back seat of the car he was driving, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said today.

The cocaine has an estimated street value of $1.7 million, officials said.

Jose Jaime Gamez-Hernandez, of Santiago, Mexico, was arrested Saturday at the Hidalgo International Bridge. He was in federal custody today pending an appearance before a U.S. magistrate on drug charges.

CBP officers said they saw oddities in the undercarriage of the car Gamez-Hernandez was driving. A drug-sniffing dog reacted to the vehicle. The cocaine was found hidden in a manmade compartment under the back seat.

I am not surprised. Mexico is the main point of entry of many illegal drugs and has been for some time. If you look at the Natioanl Drug Threat 2007 Publication you will see how much the Mexicans are involved in illegal drugs and money laundering. I am giving the online version of this publication for all to see. It is long so you may want to focus on the first paragraph about each drug and look at the charts and maps. This shows how much of a threat they are to our country.
