A Mexican man was sentenced to 10 years in prison Monday after he was caught in a van with more than 1 1/2 tons of marijuana, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

Jorge Antonio Burruel Bojorquez, 33, of Caborca, Sonora, pleaded guilty on May 17 to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute marijuana.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Burruel Bojorquez on June 15, 2005, after a suspected stash house on Old Nogales Highway on the South Side was put under surveillance, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

Burruel Bojorquez was seen leaving the house in a weighed-down van, the office said. Agents eventually stopped the van near North Oracle and West River roads.

When approaching the van, agents smelled marijuana, and a search revealed 188 bales of the drug stacked from the floor to the ceiling. The drugs weighed 3,272 pounds, the office said.

A five-year term of supervised release will follow Burruel Bojorquez's incarceration. As a condition of that release, he was ordered not to illegally re-enter the United States if he is deported after his prison term, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
