    Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio
WASHINGTON – Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, misunderstood the results of a vote on an amendment to the "comprehensive immigration reform" bill being debated in the upper house today.

He also is apparently unfamiliar with efforts to re-impose the Fairness Doctrine on broadcasters operating on the public airwaves.

But it was nationally syndicated radio talk-show host Sean Hannity's persistent grilling about the senator's intentions on key cloture votes leading to a showdown on what is characterized as an "amnesty" bill that caused Voinovich to melt down before millions of listeners today.

The normally low-profile Republican hung up on the No. 2 talk host in the country.

Listen to Part 1 of Voinovich interview

The key sticking point in the conversation was Hannity's question as to whether the senator had done a cost analysis on the bill. The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think-tank, estimates the bill would cost the American taxpayers $2.5 trillion.

Voinovich said he didn't believe the cost would be that high because a third of those eligible for a path to citizenship would never take it.

"How do you know that?" Hannity asked. "Where does that figure come from?"

Voinovich did not provide any supporting evidence for his contention and admitted he had read neither the bill itself or the Heritage Foundation analysis.

    Sean Hannity

The senator complained that some of his constituents have attempted to "intimidate" him by saying they would oppose his re-election if he voted for the bill.

"You do not intimidate George Voinovich," he said. "During my 40 years in this business, I have always looked at the pros and cons of each piece of legislation and made a determination. If people don't like my decision, they can express their will during the next election."

When Hannity began making the case against the "amnesty" bill, Voinovich interrupted, asking: "Are you happy with the current legislation? Our current laws stink!"

"No one is enforcing those laws, senator," said Hannity. "That's the problem. It's been five and half years since 9/11, and the border is still not secure."

Listen to Part 2 of Voinovich interview

When Hannity returned to the issue of cost analysis, Voinovich cut the conversation short.

"I don't really think there is any point talking to you further," said Voinovich. "You are just looking for someone to agree with you. I'm disappointed in you."

The conversation began with a question from Hannity about whether the senator supported the Fairness Doctrine, currently a hot topic among Voinovich's colleagues.

"Fairness Doctrine – I'm all for it, whatever it is," he said. "I think everyone should be open to show the other side. That's what you do every night on Fox. That's great!"

When Hannity reminded Voinovich that the Fairness Doctrine would establish government regulatory bureaucracies to enforce this balance, Voinovich quickly retreated.

Voinovich also asserted efforts in the Senate earlier in the day were successful at amending the immigration bill to require illegal aliens to return to their nation of origin before getting on a path for a green card. When Hannity pointed out the measure failed in a 53-45 vote, Voinovich seemed stunned.

"He doesn't even know what the Fairness Doctrine is," exclaimed Hannity. "He doesn't even know the outcome of a vote in the Senate today. And he gets mad at me when I try to explain it to him!"

WND was not able to get through to Voinovich's Senate office, which was continually busy.

Light up the phones at Voinovich's Office about his gutless defense of amnesty!

Ohio's economy is directly tied to downturns in manufacturing and especially auto manufacturing. With GM and Ford's recent financial problems, the jobs available in the market should be available only for citizens, many laid off or eliminated from the auto industry. What people outside the Rust Belt don't understand is that auto industry downturns kill of lots and lots of jobs from suppliers, parts contractors, machine shops, convenience stores, restaurants, etc.

The thought that illegal aliens would have an opportunity to compete with American citizens for those jobs is absolutely repulsive. The legal citizens of Ohio have no friends in DC. To me, Sherrod Brown and George Voinovich have shown all the signs of buying off on the amnesty for the enforcement lie.

If you are from Ohio, you OWE your fellow citizens a call and fax to both of these Ohio sellouts. I am furious when I hear that hardworking blue collar people who gave everything to the auto and steel industries are about to get screwed! Even if you are not from Ohio, give these clowns a call and knock Voinovich off the fence!

Call Voinovich and Brown and let them know this is unacceptable! NO on cloture is the only acceptable position!

If you live in Columbus, Cincinnati, Dayton, Cleveland, Toledo or anywhere else in Ohio you have to raise a big big stink with both of these guys! Even if you don't live in the Buckeye State let him have it, he's earned a grilling!

Wow, he's going to be voting on one of, if not THE most important piece of legislation and not only is he unaware of the basic impacts of the bill, he hasn't even bothered to try to read it.

Give the guys like Sessions, Vitter, DeMint, etc. some credit - at least they are paying attention to the details and speaking up.

Yes, I agree with jecg - that sounds like a grand invitation to let your collective voices be heard to the "I'm too smart and busy for you lowly constituents" Senator Boinkasnitch.

On Hannity today, Voinovich actually bragged that he has "40 years experience in this business".

With 40 "years in this business" Senator, one would think you would have been prepared for the Hannity interview! How could you get on the phone with Hannity NOT HAVING READ THE BILL? With no cost information? WOW...that's breathtaking! I guess you've been there toooooooo long!

After repeated efforts by Hannity, Voinovich finally admitted he had only read excerpts from the bill but he didn't need to read the entire document because he knew what was in it!

He also knew what it would cost to impliment the bill (Really?) but he had no idea what the long term costs to the taxpayer would be.

What about the increased cost of Social Security, Senator?
What about the lowering of our average hourlywage because of this, Senator?
What about the cost of increased crime, Senator?
What about the increased cost of welfare, Senator?

And another thing: What about the ONE DAY BACKGROUND CHECK, Senator? There's no way our government is going to do a background check on an illegal alien from Honduras in one day. But, alas, you and Kennedy DO know that, Senator. I can just see that little smirk on your face when the subject comes up.....SENATOR!

Senator, if you know what's in this bill, you are no patriot. A patriot is one who cares more for his country than his own political funding.

Thank you PhredE and Dixie for your warm welcome. I really enjoyed Mr. Gheen's interview this evening with Bill Half in Jacksonville, FL. Your organization is a "breath of fresh air", if you'll pardon the overused expression...but it's true!
